Buddy followed her, she looked so scared and alone that he could swear there was sheep blood in her too. He didn't dare touch her, just walk after her as if she knew where to go; he wanted to comfort her, to hold her, to tell her that everything was alright... But he listened to her words, bitter and twisted by the hate and misery she held in her heart right now. So he just followed her, walking carefully across the unsteady grounds as he watched her run a finger across her knecklace. Unlike her he didn't blame the others, they went somewhere that he would never dare but he stayed here because there were people to protect.
Before he realised what he was doing Buddy had spun Reirna around and was embracing her in a tight hug, holding her close against him with her snout buried in his sweaty wool. He just wanted to hold her, to show her that everything was going to be alright and life wasn't this unfair. He knew it was though... and so did she; but he just wanted to persuade her, for one minute, that the world was a much better place than it appeared to be.

Reirna carried on her way towards the raptor marshes, she was hatched there a few miles from the border with the empire. There was family there it was all she could think of doing, her mind seemed numb from the pain. She had been with Tezztor for so long this loneliness seemed life shattering. Her mind kept racing and fluctuating around the battle, him fighting so hard to hold them back. He had always protected her and she always loved it even if she put on a front and acted like she didn't need it. It never stopped him if anything it made him more protective. He gave his life to see that she would live and it pained her were she thought she would be honored. "I guess it's just the absolution of him never being there, his snug and serious expressions bringing order to the chaos of my everyday" She thought as she cried harder.
She had known him since she was young, barely into her first season as a adult. She remembered it well, parading herself around hoping to impress the males trying to find a mate. However it was a small village and most already had mates as raptors mated for life. One day this caravan came in with supplies and this young male jumped off, cloaked. At first she was scared of him, he always had this aura of death about him. He would take off from time to time and come back, death hanging even more over him. She had thought he was a soldier in the wars against the lions of the empire but he always denied it. Suddenly he stopped leaving and started courting her, it was among the most passionate times of her life. They declared their vows of mateship on the top of a cliff overlooking the entire valley. Seemed like the time just flew by after that
The tears continued to fall at a rapid pace until she was forced to stop as she could no longer see where she was going. As she sniffled a scent caught her, it was the sheep he was nearby. She growled a bit not liking being followed, she never liked being seen upset to a raptor it was a weakness. Before she knew it she felt a tough on her shoulder and suddenly her muzzle was drowning in wool. She growled and snarled fiercely at first, not appreciating being grabbed in such a matter this closeness was reserved for mates. The sheep didn't appear to want to let go and even tried to be comforting so she didn't fight it and just weeped into his wool. A eternity seemed to go by in a few minutes time. At least she managed to pull away from him and nodded, "Thank you, I really appreciate it. I don't know what to do, he has always been there. But now there is this invasion and for the first time I feel true dread, without him what am I going to do I am no fighter. We were a team."
She trailed off for a few minutes, staring hopelessly into space. "The safest place for us all would be he raptor marshes, raptors are excellent warriors and the land bids us favor in any battle. However we cannot leave these lands to die." she said, not really liking the thought of more fighting but she knew it was what Tezztor would do. Her claws continue to rub his protective scale as she pondered what to do. "Any ideas?"

Buddy was relieved to say the least, the moment she'd started to growl from his embrace he'd almost locked up in terror; he was frightened for a moment that she'd shred him to pieces for touching her. He let out a soft sigh of relief as she thanked him, nodding slightly to her but staying silent as he listened to her talk. He stared down at his feet as he pondered over what to do "These things have been sprouting up all over the place haven't they? It's not just this town that's been attacked, there will be more dissapearing and more lives being torn to pieces..." He stepped beside Reirna carefully and looked out over the marshes "I don't know what you should do... I only met you today, I can't tell you how to rule your life... I just hope you don't give up, he wouldn't want you to give up..." Buddy's gaze returned to his feet, they were still soaked in blood "We know nothing about what is causing these portals and how to stop them... If we want to help that is what we must do."

Reirna watched the sheep, nervous about his interaction with her. She had spent so much time in the company of raptors that his shy and frightful demeanor was a odd change. "I'm hardly the authority but we might be safer away from the main towns. However we do need to warn others that haven't been attacked. We have a good collection of people in our group maybe we should stick together. It would be safer I think." she said as if she had any real idea of what to do. She was not a battle priest or taught in the tactics of war but even she was sure this would be a bloody fight. This could pop up anywhere at anytime, quite different from the standing armies of raptors or lions. "I'm not a warrior like my mate was, I'm just a priest. Lets take this one bit at a time." she said trying to fake a supportive and soft tone. Her beautiful blue eyes radiated sadness and her cloth soaked in the black blood of the demons, she was hardly a holy figure by any standard.

Rayeith heard the blast as he darted between the dense limbs of the forest. he had stopped for a brief instant, hesitating about whether he should go back or not, but it was too risky. He'd find out the details later. For now, he had to make it back to civilization before any more demons decided to show up.

Rigor stood, looking to Lorn. For once, she didn't want to fight. She was drowning in hate. Hate for civilization, hate for the portals, hate for herself. She felt the urge to hack her way through the two that stood before her.. But ripped away, disappearing into the brush with no explanation. She had her own worries.

For someone born to be timid, shy and flinching Buddy sure was taking a lot of risks, specially with this woman. He took her hand carefully in his; it was bone hard and dripping slightly with blood but still aiming to comfort "Right now the others are missing since they went through the portal and your army is gone. We are the group Reirna, for now at least." Buddy gazed out across the marshes; luckily it seemed no more demons were venturing out of the portals, obviously mass sudden violent death was deturing any left. There was silence out there, over the soft ground it seemed to be swallowed up whole; everything out there seemed to be seized up and taken away.
They had to move, Buddy knew they HAD to get going somewhere before more portals popped out of no where. He couldn't get it to his feet though, he was tired from running and he didn't want to leave this blissful stillness; it made you believe that there was nothing... just nothing out there. It didn't make you think everything was good, just that everything was gone... gone and nothing was there to make you sad.

The cart Rayeith hid in reeked of cheap alcohol. Crates and barrels bounced up and down in sync with the bumpy road as the Brewer's horses struggled up the hillside. Rayeith had been desperately trying to get some sleep, but he feared the supply cart would be a prime target for bandits and couldn't bring himself to do so. The last thing he needed was to be attacked in his sleep by alcoholic loons; or worse, stray demons.
Looking up, Rayeith searched for the constellations that lie high above him in the sky. He could name them all without skipping a beat. He'd always feared the power of those stars; the power to choose destiny, change fate, and mark mortals with powers; or, as in his case, curse them. Rayeith had been born under the darkness of an eclipse, and as such, the stars had turned their backs on him. They, in their wicked ways, had stripped him of the knack for magic. He couldn't cast the simplest of spells. And so he had to put up with the fools in the Mage's Guild as they mocked him for his ineptitude. The only arcane study he had available to him was Alchemy, at which he excelled. But even the comfort of his art wasn't enough. He was determined to gain the Ability. He was determined to change his cruel fate.
A bump in the road jarred him back to his senses. Rayeith looked between the boarded walls of the cart and glimpsed a spectacular sight. The day was giving way to the eerie evening sky, casting orange flames upon the lake surrounding the Imperial City. The City itself also shone with flickering flames as the dots of lights converged into an unnatural glow about the cities high stone walls. The entire island seemed to glow with a comforting light as it nestled down into the crater of the forested valley surrounding it.
Ray didn't get to peek for long, though, before the cart began to slow down on route to a weathered inn sitting upon the hills crest. Quickly leaping from the cart and onto the dirt road, the Brewer never even suspected having harbored a hitchhiker. Rayeith made his way up to the inn, dubbed "The Highland Lodge", and entered its decrepit lobby. The busty Innkeeper seemed like a decent sort, so he quickly procured a small room upstairs and hoped for a decent night's rest without worry of being robbed. The room itself was simply a chest for unpacking and a bedroll, but at this point Rayeith didn't care. He fell asleep in minutes, despite the awful smell of old wood and barley that stained the room.

The stretch of bridge arching toward the Imperial City gates loomed in front of him, but Rayeith ignored them and walked toward the neighboring building along the strip of shops that watched over the main road into civilization. The shop was dubbed with a sign of worn condition that said "The Silver Tongue", a witty play on the use of Silver and Tongues for various potions. Producing a key from his faded robe, he quietly opened the shop door and stowed away inside.
Books lined the walls, along with glass cases displaying various ingredients. Behind the counter waited a wall lined with cabinets, all filled with Mortars, Pestles, Alembics, Calcinators, and other, more uncommon tools of the trade. His shop specialized in brewing potions with any effects you could ever need, as well as providing materials for natural remedies of local midwifes and for spells requiring focus points that high level wizards often used.
Ray spent the rest of the day cleaning up and preparing to open up shop on the following morning. If he was going to find out what happened to his books, he'd need information. It seemed only reasonable that he should make some money while he reaped his harvest, so the shop would work nicely. It was amazing what pompous wizards and clergymen would say when in the comforts of a familiar shop. Surely one would know where the books were held.
